  How It Started

The club started out in 1999 as a handful of firefighters who enjoyed walking and climbing together in places such as North Wales, Scotland and the Alps. Other firefighters began to hear about what we were getting up to and asked if they could come along. It wasn't long before family and friends also became interested, and before we knew it we had a sizable group. When Devon FRS and Somerset FRS combined in April 2007 the two climbing sections joined forces and Fire and Ice Mountaineering Club was born. Club membership is open to members of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, including both uniformed and non-uniformed staff. Family members and friends are also welcome. Most new members have little or no experience when they first join, and the more experienced, existing members are only too happy to help those people gain the experience needed to safely walk and climb in the mountains. The club has been generously supported by DSFRS Sports and Social Association, of which the club is an affiliated member. If you are interested in finding out more drop us a line.

Why do we climb?
'What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know' (Rene Daumal).

The next bit is really just for our partners and mums, so they can see that we're not telling fibs when we disappear for days on end. If you have a weak constitution look away now!
