This year’s trip to Cornwall couldn’t have been better. We were treated to glorious sunshine the whole weekend - easily the best weather we’ve had this year. A total of fourteen Fire and Ice members attended Sennen Cove for a mixture of sea cliff climbing and kayaking. For some members this was their first taster of rock climbing and the guys that had recently done their SPA used the opportunity to get a bit of practice in. Top ropes were set up on a couple of routes including: Banana Flake (VD) and Grip Tight Gully (D). Corner Climb (VD) and Andrimne (S) were also climbed (trad). Access to the main climbing area was by abseil and the guys seemed to enjoy this as much as the climbing.
In the afternoon we all pooled (no pun intended) the various sea going craft we had brought with us and everyone had an opportunity to try out sea kayaks, river boats and sit-on-tops. Ian even provided a twin sit-on-top, and did nothing to quash the rumours that he and Neil are having an affair as they paddled off into the sunset in perfect unison.
Saturday evening brought good food in the The Old Success Inn. and a choice of entertainment as both of the local pubs had bands playing. We opted for the Two Tone band in the First and Last Inn. and were treated to some unusual entertainment (if you were there you’ll know what I’m talking about). Neil complained that the ceilings were too low in the pub, but that's what happens when you are 7 feet tall and start pogoing to 'Too Much Too Young'.
Sunday saw a very civilised breakfast in what has to be one of the best settings in the UK, the sea front at Sennen Cove. This was followed by more climbing and sea kayaking. Rich, Aidan and I paddled from Sennen Cove to Lands End under the Cornish sea cliffs, weaving in and out of the rocky outcrops. We passed a ship wreck which was obviously a fairly recent addition to the landscape, were joined by two seals for a while, and as we returned to the cove we were privileged to be paddling in the company of a basking shark (we at least we hoped it was a basking shark!). All in all a cracking weekend.
(Camping: Sea View Holiday Park in Sennen village - Large tent and two adults £7.50 pppn. Better option (and one we have used before) is Trevada Farm.)
